10. Salty baths
A main source of the bad smell that comes from your feet is bacteria that lives on your skin and under your toenails. To eliminate the bacteria, try giving your feet a salt bath. Salt drives moisture out of your skin and kills bacteria. For an even better effect, try adding vinegar. The salt bath mixture should include:
- 1 part vinegar
- 2 parts water
- 1 cup salt
Use for two weeks as part of a nightly regimen. And don’t forget to clean under the nails with a a small pick as some dirt may still be stuck there even after the salt bath.
9. Sock choice
Several blends of fabric will make your feet sweat and, therefore, smell way worse. If you switch to cotton, however, it will let your feet breathe and reduce the smell and sweating. Also, don’t ditch socks altogether as they “catch” moisture from your feet (unless you’re wearing sandals).
8. Powder up your shoes!
To protect your shoes from that nasty smell, you can buy Lysol disinfectant spray or use shoe powder. But to save yourself a few bucks, just powder the insides of your shoes with a pinch of cornstarch. It will absorb the moisture, which is the source of the most smells in shoes. Other cheap solutions would be baby powder and talcum powder.
7. Cedarwood oil
In addition to being aromatic, cedarwood oil has antifungal and antiseptic properties. You can make your own massage oil blend. Use:
- 5 drops cedarwood oil
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
Gently massage it into your feet, and go to sleep. You can also use it with cotton socks overnight.
6. Sugar scrub
A sugar scrub is commonly used for the lips and body, but you can actually use it for your feet as well. It will exfoliate the layer of dead skin and calluses. You can make a thick paste with:
- Isopropyl alcohol (>91%)
- 3 parts sugar
- 1 part water
Scrub away, and then wash it off with clean water. You can use this scrub about 3 times a week.
5. Change your diet
Diet is a huge factor when it comes to body odor — and that includes feet! Several common foods can be contributing to your foot’s unpleasant smell. If you suffer from bad foot odor, try to eliminate coffee, red meat, onion, garlic, cauliflower and alcohol from your diet. There are also several strong-smelling spices that could be the reason for body odor.
4. Soaps
You can buy antifungal or antibacterial soaps to use on your feet instead of the shower gel that you use on the rest of your body.
3. Check for illness
As we have mentioned before, the main cause of bacteria spreading in your shoewear is sweating. Excessive sweating, however, can be a sigh of hyperhidrosis, which would require not only home remedies but medical treatment.
2. Gym flops
A real lifesaver for those who attend the gym regularly — invest in a pair of flip-flops to go to the gym in. They will allow your feet to breathe during intense workouts and protect your feet from nasty showers and locker-room floors.
1. Onions in socks
Just putting a couple of pieces of onion into your socks overnight can kill an infection and strengthen your immune system. It is also believed to have an impact due to the acupressure points on your feet.
